Visually, this is easily the best looking shooter ever created, in addition to being one of the Dreamcast's finest showpieces. We've also come to appreciate the game's artistic values now that we've had more time with it. Of particular merit are the boss battles, which manage to put your light/dark skills to the ultimate test. Treasure truly does make inventive use of its unique game system, providing one of the most intense shooting experiences we've ever had. Now that we've been able to sink our teeth into the game without having to plop in 100 yen every few moments, we've come to appreciate it even more. The Dreamcast port seems to be identical play-wise to the arcade version, the only difference being that you can play using a D-pad instead of a joystick (something which we prefer with shooters anyhow). However, while the games share the same top-down vertically scrolling perspective (with bits of camerawork thrown in to show your ship zipping around the world from time to time), they're markedly different beasts, with this new entry incorporating ideas from another Treasure classic, Silhouette Mirage.įor a full look at the game's play mechanics, check out this play test of the arcade version. And that's probably what you'll think when first sinking your hands into Ikaruga it is codenamed "Project RS-2", after all. Shooting fans think of one thing when they hear mention of Treasure: Radiant Silvergun.
